The familiar roar of V8 muscle returned to the sun, sand and surf of the Gold Coast, along with 28 of the biggest stars of international motorsport paired up with our own home-grown heroes for the ultimate challenge around the streets of Surfers Paradise in the Armor All Gold Coast 600 from October 21-23.
The highlight of the weekend was the 300km V8 Supercar races on both Saturday and Sunday with all teams having signed high-profile international stars as part of their endurance line-ups.
Among those was European racing legend Emanuele Pirro, who was the co-driver for Stone Brothers Racing’s young star Shane van Gisbergen who is currently running third in the championship.
Pirro, the former F1 driver, is regarded as a “God” by Audi fans around the world after helping the German manufacturer to no less than five outright victories in the Le Mans 24-hour event in France (2000, 01, 02, 06, 07) – not to mention thirds in 1999, 03, 04 and 05.
Commenting on the race, the Italian said “It’s been a terrific experience. I go home with a big smile on my face and I will never stop thanking the team and everybody for helping me – I learnt a lot and I had a lot of fun driving a V8 Supercar. I think our performance today was a lot better than the results show – we didn’t really make any big mistakes, we just weren’t hit by good luck. Overall a fantastic experience and I thank god Shane keeps his position in the Championship so he can be happy. I can say from now I already look forward to coming back and already feel like I’m at home here.”
