Suzuki has taken on the hot hatch brigade with its March launch of the all-new Swift Sport. The sporty five-door hatch has joined the Japanese brand’s popular city car range, with a similar price to its predecessor.
The new Sport packs a more powerful 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 100kW of power and 160Nm of torque – up 30kW and 30Nm over the regular Swift and 8kW/12Nm over the previous Swift Sport.
While those power outputs may not scream performance, the new model weighs less than 1100 kilograms and the new engine sips just 6.5 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres. The Swift Sport is available with a six-speed manual transmission and a CVT automatic transmission with seven-speed manual mode.
Hailed as one of Suzuki’s most visually exciting designs, the Swift Sport’s styling changes include a more aggressive front bumper with a wide-mouthed grille and sharply styled fog-light surrounds. It also combines blacked out headlight surrounds, 17-inch alloys, lower door sill mouldings and a chunky rear spoiler.
The new model comes fully loaded, with the standard equipment list including keyless entry and start, tinted rear windows, cruise control and a six-speaker stereo with USB input and Bluetooth audio streaming.
Additional features include stainless steel foot pedals, a leather steering wheel with audio controls, dual exhaust pipes and sporty upholstery.
High levels of safety are assured with a slight, stiff, impact-absorbing body, standard seven airbags (including dual front, front side, full-length curtain and driver’s knee) and ESP (Electronic Stability Program).
With so many features, the Swift Sport is sure to rival Volkswagen’s Polo GTI, Skoda’s Fabia vRS, Citroen’s DS3 D-Sport, Ford’s Fiesta Zetec and Hyundai’s Veloster.
