Volvo has finally taken the wraps off the all-new XC90 model which will be the safest, most hi-tech and most economical SUV on the market.
The new XC90 will be longer, wider, taller and lower and will have increased passenger space in the second and third row of seats.
But, despite it being bigger, the 2015 XC90 is 125kg lighter, thanks to the extensive use of ultra-high-strength boron steel in its construction. - making it five times stronger than the first generation XC90.
The XC90 boasts two world first safety technologies.
The new safe positioning system - Volvo calls it run-off road protection, is designed to tighten the front seat belts if it senses control has been lost and in conjunction with energy-absorbing materials in the seat, reduces the forces on a person’s spine in a hard landing.
The other system is the auto-braking feature, which cuts in if a driver pulls out in front of oncoming traffic. The autonomous braking is designed to prevent accidents where one vehicle cross in front of another.
Both safety systems bring Volvo closer to its vision of nobody being seriously injured or killed in any of its vehicles by 2020.
These are in addition to the “Queue Assist” which operates in low speed situations, the pre-crash detection for rear impacts, Roll Stability Control, Autonomous Emergency Braking (‘City Safety’), blind-spot monitoring and road sign recognition.
The parallel Park Assist Pilot now comes with a reverse perpendicular parking, and will now assist you as you exit the parking space as well.
The innovative XC90 running gear brings with it a line-up of new and efficient petrol and diesel engines. All will be 2.0-litre four-cylinder units and part of the new Drive-E family.
All Australian models are expected to be all-wheel-drive and seven-seat.
