Volvo V40 – safest ever.

Volvo says the development goal for the V40 was “to build into it the same safety level as in larger cars,” and they have achieved it. Volvo has been awarded the top rating of five stars in the Euro NCAP collision test and also the best overall score ever recorded by any vehicle.

"A fantastic result … yet another important step toward our 2020 target - that nobody should die or be seriously injured in a Volvo,"

To achieve this result the new Volvo V40 has been launched as the most intelligent and safest car in its segment, and it is packed with active safety systems such as:

  • Auto brake,
  • Pedestrian Detection Airbag, the innovative airbag to shield pedestrians in the event of collision,
  • Lane Keeping Aid which helps the driver stay within his or her lane,
  • Automatic road sign information which displays the speed zone on the new TFT instrument panel, (TFT is the next generation LCD technology)
  • Auto high beam,
  • Cross traffic alert radar system which can warn drivers of approaching cars when you are reversing, and
  • BLIS which helps the driver detect vehicles in the offset rear ‘blind spot.

In relation to the trimmings, the V40 will come in three model variants, and four motors.

All models will have as standard equipment the new three-mode TFT instrument panel, multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, rear parking sensors, LED daytime running lights, alloy wheels (16, 17 and 18-inch depending on model), auto wipers and lights, a smart frameless rear-view mirror and seven airbags (including a driver’s kneebag).

The Kinetic, the entry-level version, has T-Tec cloth trim (with contrasting stitching), a power driver’s seat, halogen headlight lamps, 16-inch alloys and a five-inch multifunction centre stack display (Bluetooth audio streaming included).

The Luxury, the next step up is available in a choice of T4 and D4 powertrains, and you add a powered passenger seat, leather-trimmed seats, bi-Xenon active headlights and sat-nav with seven-inch display including a reversing camera. Wheels are 17-inch.

The top of the range T5-only R-Design adds sports seats with upgraded leather (a choice of perforated facings), plus a bevy of internal and external design tweaks and unique body kit.

The V40’s pricing starts at a very competitive level in the hatch segment at $34,990 for the 1.6-litre manual-only 84kW Kinetic D2 turbo-diesel, through to the range topping (0-100km/h in 6.1 seconds) 187kW/400Nm turbo-petrol T5 R-Design priced from $49,990.
